I'm trying to do an experiment album, aside from my usual styles, and it's about 80s sounding music, like as in synthpop or general 80s. I had 2 or 3 VST's that I am using but I run out of sound from VST's.
Can anyone recommend me VST synths that ACTUALLY sound like Kraftwerk, or even 80s electronica? Effects are also nice, just to add filters or something to emulate the sound of a cassette or something. Everything should be FL Studio compatible. Also, if someone wants to suggest sample packs for retro drums, it will be appreciated.
But please notice I RUN LOW ON BUDGET, so best of all it should be free or cheap. Okay so I love this stuff and have been following it a lot as well. As far as synths go they mainly used juno's and DX-7's back then. So Arturia synths/Diva and FM8 will get you as close as you can get with softsynths.
Other ways to get a more analog feel with softsynths is to assign a slow, small LFO to the pitch and set the waveform to random. Gated reverb on linndrum snares and toms and 707 samples are great as well. The sound design was a lot more basic back then, just straight up raw waveforms with some saturation, delay, and reverb will do the trick. Just listen to a lot of Mitch Murder and Com Truise to get some inspiration. I've answered something like this before. 80's synths are easy to make, not trying to demean you or anything, but it really isn't hard.
You should look up some synthesis tutorials to get a good idea on envelopes/filters waveforms etc. A typical 80s bass will be 2 detuned saw oscillators with LP and some filter cutoff. Typical 80s drums will be Linndrum/Oberheim/Simmons samples with a gated reverb. I made track with nothing but native FL plugins (mainly 3Xosc and PoiZone), as well as, but on this one I used SQ8L (which someone mentioned here) on one or two synths.
However, in my opinion, the best VST for making 80's sounds is. It's free and it sounds pure 80's from the get go. I used Synth1 to make most synths in.
Is my collection of vintage drum kits. There are plenty of kits to choose from, but I would recommend finding a proper samplepack for Linndrum, Oberheim and Simmons kits as not all kits on here will contain every sound that drum machine was capable of making.
Anyway, hope this helped, good luck. TL;DR: You don't need external plugins. Just use plenty of detuning and gated reverb. Also follow if you haven't already.
